Philadelphia fashionistas have been influenced by designer Angela Edmunds’ fluid style sensibilities since the 1999 inception of Sarai Style. Since then, Edmunds has developed Sarai Style into a respected Ready to Wear and Couture collection, which has been featured among the top designers in numerous shows in the region.
The company developed a model management department called The Sarai Family with models ranging in height from 5’0 to 6’6. Sarai Style has also served as one of the sponsoring internship companies for the Art Institute and Drexel University. Today, Edmunds, 30, is displaying her business acumen with a new division of the Sarai Style: Showroom 77.
Named in part for the year she was born, Showroom 77 is Philadelphia’s first wholesale/retail multi-clothing and accessory label showroom, servicing buyers and private clients. The success of Showroom77 is based not only on Edmunds’ fashion line, but also on her inclusion of other designers in need of sales assistance.
“When this space became available, I just had the idea that I can’t just use this for my line, Saria Style,” said Edmunds. “I know that there’s a lot that is going on in Philadelphia with many different designers. There is potential here. There is fashion in Philadelphia and designers need sales help and it is just something that we don’t have are showrooms like in New York or L.A. And a lot of people think that you can only have showrooms like that in New York or L.A., so a lot of times people re still confused when they see the direction of the showroom. [I have to explain] it is a show room. It’s actually a wholesale/retail showroom. It has definitely taken the business in a whole new direction.”
Showroom 77 has hosted collections of some of Philadelphia’s premier designers including Sarai Style, Jaames Nelson Couture, Carioca da Gema, Letau Designs, Kemet Collective, and Zívílé Pupínyté, also work as seen on New York Fashion Week from Tamara Pogosian. This summer, designer Terina McKinney’s 2007 Jypsea collection of stylish leather handbags and home accessories are among Showroom 77’s featured collections.
“That’s the other thing about it: The showroom isn’t just clothing and it’s not just women’s; its men’s clothing as well, along with footwear and accessories,” explained Edmunds.
Edmunds has been a busy behind-the-scenes stylists for a number of projects including the cover of Kindred The Family Soul’s “In This Life Together” CD, Philadelphia Style Magazine, BET’s Rip the Runway, and most currently for CN8 news. Spree Models Online TV has lauded Edmunds work as a businesswoman and her Sarai Style styling department continues to serve those in the entertainment and fashion industry, along with everyday individuals looking to revamp their image.
“It’s definitely a learning experience doing this showroom because as great as it is having the space, this is my first time going in this direction and running a showroom,” noted Edmunds. “So, I’ve learned that a showroom doesn’t sit still; it travels. So a lot of it is even taking the collection to buyers, as well as buyers coming here.
